Project Summary
The Virginia Avenue NW protected bike lane (PBL) project is part of DDOT’s commitment and vision to expand the network of protected bike lanes throughout the District. This project will help close a gap in the regional bikeway network and has been a part of strategic planning efforts in recent years. Once complete, people on bikes will be able to more safely connect from the Rock Creek Trail, Theodore Roosevelt Bridge/I-66 trail, and Capital Crescent Trail to Downtown where they can utilize the existing bikeways as well as planned facilities on G St, 20th St, 21st St, and Pennsylvania Ave NW. This project seeks to build safer streets for all road users, but especially bicyclists and pedestrians which is consistent with DDOT’s Vision Zero Initiative.

Project Designs
Conditions along Virginia Ave NW from Constitution Ave NW to Rock Creek and Potomac Pkwy NW vary greatly on different parts of the street. The following cross section drawings are intended to be illustrative of the options for developing a protected bike lane in the corridor, but one alternative may not fit all situations so the approach may differ throughout the corridor. The following cross sections depict an approximation of conditions along Virginia Ave NW from Constitution Ave to Rock Creek and Potomac Pkwy and three proposed alternative designs for the PBL. Please note that all design alternatives will utilize existing curb to curb right-of-way of 32 feet on each side of the median.
In December 2020, DDOT selected a preferred concept for the project that is linked below. Note that it is primarily based on Alternative A, but between G St NW and Rock Creek and Potomac Pkwy, it would be a two-way PBL on the southwest side of the street.

Preferred Conceptual Design
In December 2020 DDOT selected a preferred conceptual design for the project based on input from the residents and institutions in the corridor and collaboration between DDOT planners, designers, and engineers.
NOTE: that the plan provided below is conceptual in nature. The drawing therefore may exclude key connections and accommodations for existing and planned bicycle and bus infrastructure, but offers an illustration of how the concept would fit within the corridor. Prior to construction, the final design for the project will be made available through a Notice of Intent.
